6. Coldplay – Ghost Stories
Release Date: May 16
After teasing us with 2 tracks from the album (“Magic” & “Midnight”) which surprisingly sound like the older Coldplay we all are familiar with, the album is expected to be released on 16th May. The artwork for the album as well as the two released singles is refreshingly different and following the release of these two singles and their earlier contribution of “Atlas” to “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” soundtrack, the buzz around the album is substantial.
5. Opeth – Pale Communion
Release Date: June 17
Progressive giants Opeth just announced the follow up to their 2011’s divisive “Heritage”. Although said to be a little bit more heavier than Heritage, this album is still the subject of a lot of speculation as what do Opeth churn out now in this stage of their career, having faced almost every kind of adulation and criticism in the last 24 years.
Side note: This album has been mixed by none other than the unassailable “Steven Wilson”, which makes the album all the more exciting!
4. Skyharbor – (To Be Announced)
Release Date: TBA
New Delhi’s own “Skyharbor” which has been taking the worldwide metal scene by storm are expected to release the follow up to their 2012’s insanely successful “Blinding White Noise” this year. Although not officially announced, all the posts about it from the band hint at an impending release. This album will see the magnificent Daniel Tomkins take the vocal duties full-time as opposed to the last album that credited him as a session musician. Given that it is not set in stone that the album might release this year (and keeping in mind how much BWN was delayed), this album occupies a measly 4th position in our list. Hell, if it were to release in the coming months, it might have even topped the list!
3. Anberlin – (To Be Announced)
Release Date: TBA
2014 will see the Florida band return one last time for the album which will be their final album before they disband. After the extremely satisfying “Vital” and its reworked edition “Devotion”, it is hard to believe that we would have to bid goodbye to the band that gave us some extremely fantastic albums like “Cities” and “Dark is the way, Light is a place”. We hope that this won’t be the end of Anberlin and they will return after a short hiatus.
2. Linkin Park – The Hunting Party
Release Date: June
Linkin Park’s new record is widely rumoured to be titled “The Hunting Party” and will release sometime in June. The reports till now mention it to be a much heavier record than their last “Living Things”. No one expects LP to Vildhjarta heavy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnaClnVnj_c) but a return to their heavier edgy sound has been long demanded by fans. The one song that has been released (“Guilty All The Same”) doesn’t really fire up our expectations but given the long standing allegiance of this author towards Linkin Park, this album notches up a respectable second position in this list.
1. Anathema – Distant Satellites
Release Date: June 9
The follow up to Anathema’s 2012’s hugely successful “Weather Systems” is our most anticipated album of this year. Vincent & Co return to present us with another (hopefully) dazzling album which they say is the culmination of everything Anathema been working up to so far in their musical path. And that description makes the wait all the more excruciating!
Side note: Four tracks on this album have also been mixed by the legendary “Steven Wilson”. Holy Shit! This man doesn’t stop, does he?
